The Greensboro Bar Association was formed on March
15, 1929. Over its 63 year history, many projects and committees have been
developed, expanded and completed.
The Awards & Recognitions Committee was
established in 2000 to research
and make recommendations to the Executive Board for annual awards.
On June 1, 1998, the
Greensboro and High Point Bar Associations contracted with Carolina
Psychological Associates, PA to provide the BarCARES Program.
The Community Service
Committee was established in 1990 with the broad task of researching the
needs of the community and recommending a community service project for
the Greensboro Bar that would serve the community and also allow attorneys
to work together on a non legal project that involved more than giving
money.
The Fee Dispute Arbitration
Committee was begun locally in 1993 and is now a function of the 18th
Judicial District, as of 2000.
The Newsletter Editor chair
has been held by Sam West from 1978-2002 less three years by Bob Cone and
Durant Glover.
The Public Relations
Committee was established in 1990 to arrange publicity and supporting
information to newspapers, television and radio for elections of officers
and directors, for activities by lawyers in the community and activities
of the Association, such as Awards, Community Service Projects and
recognitions.
The Quality of Life
Committee was established in 1996, largely through the efforts of Steve
Crihfield as chair and Charlie Younce as President, this committee worked
with the 18th Judicial District judges to create the Vacation
Policy which was adopted effective January 1, 1997 by the 18th
Judicial District, and implemented BarCares in this Association.
The GBA website created in
1999 under the leadership of Art MacCord, chair, this committee manages,
maintains, seeks out and adds information of interest to members and to
the public about legal matters, Association news, business, history,
contacts and opportunities for service, including newsletters, history,
membership, press releases, articles, memorials, committees, calendar, pro
bono opportunities and information, grievance and fee dispute contact
information, links and resources of subjects (legal and otherwise) of
interest to members.
The Family Law Section was
established 1989 in cooperation with the High Point Bar Association to
address matters of interest to attorneys practicing domestic or family law
in Guilford County.
The Alternative Dispute
Resolution Section was established in 1998, for education of certified
mediators and discussion about current issues. Meetings are formatted to
qualify for continuing mediation education.
The Real Property Section
was established in 1989 to address matters of interest to attorneys
practicing real estate law in Guilford County, including associate
memberships by High Point attorneys.
The Greensboro Association
Foundation, Inc. was established in 1990 from $30,000 in funds from
Association members, with substantial contributions over the years since
through memorial contributions, honoraria and profits from CLE seminar
presentations. The Foundation has sponsored many projects including
5 houses for Habitat for Humanity of Greensboro, student law-related
trips, UNC-G Social Work instructional video, presentations to schools,
eldercare project, courthouse needs such as law library, courtroom
television and cart, Downtown Roundball Tournament for charity, Millenium
Gate and Civil Rights Museum contributions.
