Honoring a Legacy of Service: Erwin Fuller Receives Distinguished Service Award

At its Annual Joint Meeting on April 16, 2026, the Greensboro Bar Association and the 24th Judicial District recognized W. Erwin Fuller Jr. with the Distinguished Service Award—the highest honor bestowed by the GBA. Established in 1993, the award celebrates attorneys who demonstrate an unwavering commitment to the law, the administration of justice, the highest ethical standards, and meaningful public service. Fuller’s career reflects each of these ideals in full measure.
For more than six decades, Fuller has been a pillar of the legal community, beginning his practice with Brooks Pierce in 1965 after graduating from Duke Law School and clerking on the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Fourth Circuit. His leadership within the bar is both deep and enduring—serving as GBA President, chairing its Awards Committee for two decades, and contributing extensively to the North Carolina Bar Association and State Bar. As noted in remarks presented by Judge Robby Hassell, Fuller’s professional accomplishments alone would warrant recognition; yet it is his sustained commitment to service that truly distinguishes his legacy.
Beyond the practice of law, Fuller has devoted himself to the Greensboro community through countless civic, charitable, and faith-based roles. From leadership in Kiwanis and educational institutions to decades of pro bono work and service through his church, he has embodied the very definition of a “citizen lawyer.” His career stands as a powerful reminder that the impact of our profession extends far beyond the courtroom—it lives in the communities we serve and the example we set.
