GBA Member Henry Isaacson Receives Triad Business Journal’s Legacy Award for Long-Standing Contribution to Triad’s Aerotropolis

November 28, 2023/in December 2023, Newsletter

Since the early 1960’s, attorney and GBA member Henry H. Isaacson has exhibited the significance of innovation and creativity in legal practice.  His contribution was recently recognized by the Triad Business Journal who awarded Isaacson with the TBJ Legacy Award.  According to the Journal, the Legacy Award honors a person who has contributed to the economic well-being of the Triad through real estate development, finance and planning.

Having practiced law in Greensboro from 1961-2022 (after serving in the Judge Advocate General’s Dept. of the U.S. Air Force), he founded the firm which is now Isaacson Sheridan in 1980.

As a prominent legal leader in Greensboro’s real estate industry, Isaacson’s practice covered various areas of zoning and land use regulation and his advocacy soon became the foundation for today’s booming and ever-growing aerotropolis, commercial landscape.

When University of North Carolina business professor John Kasarda started talking-up the idea of building an aerospace hub at airport in the early 2000s, Henry Isaacson immediately became a strong advocate and resource.  Isaacson was chairman of the Piedmont Triad International Airport Authority board at the time and recruited a committee to encourage fellow board members and the business community to embrace professor Kasarda’s idea of making an aerotropolis out of a city that has (and values) its own airport.

According to a recent Triad Business Journal article announcing Isaacson’s receipt of the TBJ award, “pitching the idea wasn’t an easy sell at first because it involved measures such as buying a neighboring golf course to ensure the airport-controlled land on which industries could build, and convincing the state Department of Transportation to build an unusually large bridge over I-73 to connect future industrial land to runways.

However, man years later, PTI qualifies for the term, hosting some 8,600 jobs and an annual economic impact put at $8.6 billion as a hub specializing in aerospace.

Because of Isaacson’s powerful contribution to developing a major new economic sector and for his other work in economic development in the Triad, the honor of the Triad Business Journal’s Legacy Award is well-deserved.

“The success that the Triad is witnessing today with the growth of Honda Aircraft Co. and others, and the recruitment of Boom Supersonic and Marshall Aerospace, can be traced back to Henry Isaacson’s advocacy and leadership,” Triad Business Journal President and Publisher Mark Gendle said. “But he’s also had an undeniable impact on the places we live, work and play — contributing to the quality of life we enjoy. He has truly influenced the economic and real estate landscapes for the better, making him a worthy recipient of this honor.”

Do You Have a 2024 Employee Engagement Plan?

November 28, 2023/in December 2023, Newsletter

In the modern workplace, fostering a culture of employee engagement is not just a trend; it’s a strategic imperative for organizations aspiring to evolve and thrive. As we navigate the post-pandemic dynamics of work, it becomes increasingly evident that a motivated and engaged workforce is the cornerstone of productivity, innovation, and overall success.

Crafting an effective employee engagement plan tailored to the unique challenges and opportunities of your law firm in 2024 will help you engage the full potential of your legal team in the pursuit of a healthy workplace and excellent client service.

Let’s take a look at where the employment market stands at the end of 2023.

Demand for workers has cooled. As of early November, the Indeed Job Postings Index, which tracks changes in jobs posted on the Indeed job search platform, shows a 22.5% decrease since its December 2021 peak.

Workers are quitting less frequently. The Bureau of Labor Statistics show the U.S. quit rate for employees was 2.3% in September, equal to the average rate in 2019, prior to the pandemic, partly as demand for workers lessens.

What are some of the challenges noted for 2024?

There is a battle between a growing labor force and the shrinking effects of an aging population. Data from the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows that the labor force participation rate of workers ages 25 to 54 increased to levels not seen since the early 2000s. As more workers join the labor force, Baby Boomers continue to retire at an accelerated pace.

Many small to mid-size law firms have employees with longevity who are beginning to retire. The longtime employees make up the ranks of law firm administrators, trusted paralegals, and support staff. With their retirement, law firms can expect to see a huge transfer of institutional knowledge.

Pay equity considerations remain strong as pay transparency laws gain ground. Pay transparency is becoming more important as laws are enacted across the U.S. requiring businesses and organizations to disclose pay in job postings and to workers upon request.

In a recent post, 10 HR Trends to Follow in 2024, ADP, one of the largest payroll companies in the U.S., suggests employers examine comprehensive pay data, create a compliance plan, as well as a clear communications strategy around compensation, pay transparency and pay equity, in order to meet the needs of the employee marketplace.

Law firms are notorious for keeping compensation information in a black box and telling employees they cannot discuss compensation among their peers. Today’s workforce requires a new strategy.

The relationship of low employee engagement to continued recruiting and retention challenges is an area to focus on in 2024. One effort to positively impact employee engagement is to leverage employee benefits as a strategic driver of recruiting, employee engagement, and retention. Talk with your employees to see what benefits are most important to them.

Following the pandemic, we are seeing extreme pressure in the workplace and mental health outcomes are worsening. Investing in practices to rebuild employee trust and wellness is more important than ever. The pandemic and the resulting work from home, return to office and hybrid work solutions have sometimes resulted in toxic work culture and low morale. Reducing the negative impacts of low office morale is rarely solved by mandatory fun or team building events. Rather, an investment in trust building and collaboration will be much more meaningful.

How to Build an Employee Engagement Plan

An effective employee engagement plan typically includes initiatives aimed at creating a positive and fulfilling work environment. Here are a few components you could consider for your employee engagement plan:

Allow opportunities for employees to be empowered through their involved in the firm. Provide opportunities for employees to develop a sense of ownership such as developing a firm mission statement, strategic plan, and goals. Or to create a client service plan. Have employees create their professional development and skill building goals and provide quarterly check-ins to make sure they are on track and that the firm is recognizing their achievements.

Providing continuous learning opportunities for increasing job skills can be key to recruiting, retaining and engaging employees. Regardless of firm size, all team members need to experience growth opportunities in order to stay fulfilled in their careers. The law is always changing, as is the technology we use. Supporting your employees in growth opportunities does not require a “break the bank” budget. There are many online opportunities for skill building at no cost or low cost such as LinkedIn Learning courses. Bar associations and paralegal associations often provide some amount of free continuing legal education as part of membership dues.

To combat difficulty in recruiting, payroll company ADP suggests a different approach for employers – focusing on building the right skills rather than finding the right skills.

“According to the ADP Research Institute, management skills and people skills are the most needed for the future of work. Deb Hughes, ADP’s senior vice president of HR and change and communications, believes soft skills will also be in demand. She says, soft skills are often undervalued in the workplace, despite their crucial role in building connections and fostering empathy. Companies that prioritize, amplify, and develop these skills in their workers will be the ones that thrive.”

The importance of a robust employee engagement plan cannot be overstated. The success of our firms is intricately tied to the commitment and enthusiasm of the legal team. By investing in a thoughtful and dynamic engagement strategy, companies not only enhance employee satisfaction and retention but also lay the groundwork for a culture of continuous improvement and innovation.

Provide regular feedback and performance reviews. Provide specific learning opportunities at the time an issue arises rather than generic feedback once a year. Allow employees the opportunity to provide feedback on their experiences, concerns, and ideas for improvement.

Evergreen Plans

As we look ahead to 2024 challenges and opportunities consider a well-crafted engagement plan is not merely a box to be checked—it is an evergreen, evolving framework that aligns strategic firm goals with the aspirations of its people. Those who prioritize employee engagement will find themselves not only weathering change effectively but also thriving in the dynamic and competitive landscape of the evolving workplace.

President of the Greensboro Bar Association

Hello GBA Members!

I hope everyone had a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.

The 2023 calendar year is quickly coming to a close. Before looking at December in terms of GBA events, I would like to take a quick look back at November. The month saw the official kickoff of the new Business/Corporate Law Section which you can learn more about elsewhere in this newsletter. We also continued our tradition of raising funds to provide books to the students of Jones Elementary School. GBA members even assisted students with their book selections through our participation in the school’s Book Fair.

Additionally, we had the pleasure of hearing from guest speaker Catherine Saunders Reach during our November member meeting discussing Generative AI and its growing impact on the legal community and the world. Some of you, like me until very recently, have been hesitant to learn more about this technology that has literally taken the world by storm over the last year. Therefore, at the very least, I recommend taking a look at the presentation materials shared with the membership following the meeting. Also,  Ms. Reach shared that while individuals may decide not to personally use Generative AI, they should strive to understand general information about it.

Looking at December, I hope to see many of you at the GBA Holiday Party at Elon Law on December 6th. Please RSVP for this event which offers members a great opportunity to connect with each other during this holiday season.

Finally, amid legal pursuits, please take time this season to prioritize the priceless: family and friends. Embrace the holiday spirit, relish special moments together, and strive to create lasting memories. Your dedication is commendable, yet savoring time with loved ones enriches life beyond measure.

The Hon. Ralph A. Walker and Attorney Donald R. Vaughan Receive Prestigious GBA Distinguished Service Award

October 31, 2023/in Newsletter, November 2023

Service to others is one of the core values of the Greensboro Bar Association.  In 1929, the GBA was established to encourage the assembly of its members for the transaction of business that furthers the public good and that maintains honor and dignity of the profession of law.

Although it is no secret that Judge Walker and Attorney Vaughan resemble the true meaning of those words from the GBA Constitution, they were certainly caught by surprise at GBA’s October 19th membership meeting when they were introduced and celebrated as the recipients of the GBA Distinguished Service Award.  Having dedicated decades of gracious service to their communities, in various capacities, Judge Walker and Attorney Vaughan continue to commit themselves to the Greensboro community, its legal profession, and the GBA.

GBA President Gerald L. Walden, Jr. and NC Bar Association President, Patti Ramseur, honor Judge Ralph A. Walker with Distinguished Service Award

The Honorable Ralph A. Walker has demonstrated selfless service in many roles over the course of his lifetime.  In his nearly sixty years of legal practice, he has served as a Guilford County solicitor, the Guilford County attorney, a partner of a private practice law firm, a Superior Court judge, and a judge for the North Carolina Court of Appeals.  Judge Walker is a veteran of the United States Army and North Carolina National Guard.  He has been a public member of the NC Medical Board, is a past board member of the Greensboro Urban Ministry, was a member of the Greensboro Mental Health Association, and is actively involved in his church.  It is apparent that Judge Walker has truly dedicated his life to serving the legal profession and his community.

GBA President Gerald L. Walden, Jr. and Judge A. Robinson (Robby) Hassell, honor Donald R. Vaughan with Distinguished Service Award

Attorney Donald R. Vaughan is a Greensboro native and Wake Forest University alumnus.  From Eagle Scout to zealous legal advocate, it is without doubt that Attorney Vaughan has been committed to public service since a young age.  Early in his career, his quest to serve led him to seek elective office—first being elected to an at-large position on the Greensboro City Council and ultimately serving two terms as Greensboro’s Mayor Pro Tempore. His term was followed by his election to the NC Senate for two terms.  Attorney Vaughan’s private law practice over the last several decades has afforded him opportunities to help others, whether in the halls of traffic court or the cells of our prisons, where he has devoted time in post-conviction clemency matters.   Attorney Vaughan is an adjunct professor at Wake Forest and Elon Law Schools.  His presence in the community is one that illustrates the true meaning of selfless service, and it is a badge of service worn well.

Are You Ready for 2024?

October 31, 2023/in Newsletter, November 2023

Camille Stell
is President and CEO of Lawyers Mutual Consulting & Services. Continue this conversation by contacting Camille at camille@lawyersmutualnc.com or

The end of the year is barreling towards us – are you ready? If not, here are a few tips for tidying up the financial side of your law practice.

Financial Management

For many lawyers, financial management is the business area of practicing law that provides the most heartburn. It’s completely understandable. But it is to your own detriment that you don’t understand the financial fundamentals better. Hire financial advisors to aid you in better understanding your business. Too many lawyers delegate responsibility to employees who have not been properly trained.

Be aware of potential landmines. A major red flag is having one employee who has all financial responsibility: check writing, bookkeeping, trust account management, financial reconciliation, as well serves as the gatekeeper for all communication with your financial partners and bank. Checks and balances are key. Often, there is no ill intent on the part of the employee, just a lack of knowledge. If, as the owner, you do not understand the process, you will have a hard time finding the flaws in your system or properly supervising.

Analyze Your Cash Flow

Brenda Barnes, law firm consultant and compensation expert, has this to say about law firm finance, “A good system of cash flow management can spell the difference between a successful business and a failed one. You need positive future cash flow to meet your debt commitments. Strong cash flow management also provides the ability to invest in growth. Getting to a position of excess cash flow helps your company operate in a strategic, proactive way, and can help keep you from operating on the defensive. Year end is an excellent time to document your cash flow, prepare a cash flow budget, and look for areas of improvement.”

Financial Review

Here is a checklist for law firms to strategically maximize profitability in 2024.

  • Review realization rates and compare to prior years
  • Review client profitability to assist with determining billing rate adjustments
  • Review attorney and paralegal billing rates to determine whether an adjustment is necessary. If so, establish a communication protocol with your clients to discuss.
  • Set timekeeper budgets including billable hours, collections, and origination goals
  • Review your general ledger and correct coding adjustments as necessary
  • Review your Profit & Loss report. Where do you stand? If you have a larger than expected profit, are there any major purchases (investments in your firm) you should make now that can be depreciated? Make sure you have the cash. Talk to your CPA tax advisor.
  • Verify loan accounts and clean them up if necessary
  • Reduce your receivables – follow up with clients to get paid
  • Write off bad debt if necessary but work on getting paid first
  • Make SEP IRA or 401k contributions and donations to charity to reduce taxable income. Talk to your CPA tax advisor.
  • Verify your 1099 information is set up properly in your accounting system. Ensure you have W9’s and Tax ID numbers for issuing correct tax forms.
  • Begin to think about year-end bonuses. Will you give these this year or in January?
  • Review benefits that should be reported on W-2’s such as health and life insurance, transportation subsidies, moving expense reimbursements, and education debt or education reimbursement programs
  • Create budgets for 2024
  • Focus on your balance sheet – verify all your account balances

Strategic Look Ahead

Continue to examine how the pandemic and current economic market has impacted your law firm.

  • How is your area of practice performing? Are your clients able to pay their bills timely? Are your rates supporting your practice?
  • How are your employees faring? Are your work from office / work from home protocols meeting the firm’s needs? How stable is your remote work plan? Does your post-pandemic work force plan need further adjustment?
  • How is your personal mental health holding up? Do you have the support you need to continue to serve your clients? Are you able to support and encourage your team members?

Too often in our busy lives, we don’t take time for reflection. Schedule time to reflect on the current state and future of your firm. Ask your employees for input as their front-line communications with clients may reveal stresses or successes that don’t see from your point of view.

Conclusion

Use a year-end review to see how your law firm performed under pressure and to make the changes necessary to strengthen your practice. With an objective look back, you can plan for moving forward.

Message from the President, November 2023

October 31, 2023/in Newsletter, November 2023
Gerald L. Walden, Jr. President of the Greensboro Bar Association

Gerald L. Walden, Jr.
President of the Greensboro Bar Association

Hello GBA Members!

With this month being November and Thanksgiving fast approaching, I want to share something I am thankful for – the GBA.

The following events of the last two weeks have led me to reflect on when I first began my career as an attorney 22 years ago:

  • Witnessing the GBA’s recognition of Judge Ralph Walker as one of two Distinguished Service Award winners – a man who was serving on the NC Court Appeals and was so welcoming to me when I began my judicial clerkship there immediately following graduation;
  • Hearing seasoned GBA attorney, Margaret Dudley, share a personal story from her time at law school during our October member meeting which culminated in her advising the members to not let the practice of law prevent them from making time for family and friends; and
  • Participating in the swearing-in ceremony of newly licensed attorneys to the NC Bar hosted by the GBA’s Young Lawyers Section.

When reflecting on my early years, I realized that I was practicing law for nearly a decade in Greensboro before connecting with the GBA. As someone who went in-house directly after my clerkship, there really was no business need for me to engage with local attorneys since literally none of the matters I worked on were tied to the Triad area. Nevertheless, I am thankful to former GBA president, Afi Johnson-Parris, for personally reaching out and asking me to join the GBA. Since that time, I have enjoyed my membership in the GBA immensely – developing personally and professionally along the way.

I’ll close with a portion of the remarks I shared during the swearing-in ceremony I mentioned above; remarks I wish I had heard earlier in my legal career:

New lawyers, you are joining a legal community that, while adversarial at times when defending and advocating for clients, is quite collegial and wants to see you succeed as your success is a win for the profession. Never is that more evident than through the members of the Greensboro Bar Association. . . . It has been a place where I have found mentors and mentees, been given and offered advice, received opportunities to give back to my community and take on leadership roles, and simply connected with like-minded individuals who have become great colleagues and friends.

Volunteers Needed for the GBA Welcome Wagon

September 29, 2023/in Newsletter, October 2023

The Membership Committee (Judge Bill Davis and Sarah Roane) needs your help!  In an effort to encourage new members to participate in the GBA’s programming and meet other members, we are once again initiating the Welcome Wagon program where we pair existing members with new members who are attending their first lunch or dinner meeting.  Your participation would involve contacting the new member to introduce yourself and make arrangements to meet at the meeting, as well as taking the new member around during the social hour to introduce them to other members.  If the new member prefers, you could also sit with them during the meeting.  You would not be expected to be available for every meeting, you would just be volunteering to be in a pool of folks who we would reach out to as needed to see if a pairing could be made.

If you would like to participate, please reach out to Sarah Roane at sarahroane@gmail.com.
