Taniya Reaves Presented with GBA Award for Pro Bono Service

February 1, 2022/in February 2022, Frontpage Article, Newsletter
Taniya-D-Reaves

Taniya D. Reaves

The Greensboro Bar Association’s 2021 Pro Bono Award was presented to Taniya D. Reaves at the virtual member meeting on January 20, 2022.

Taniya is well deserving of this award.  She earned her Juris Doctor from North Carolina Central University School of Law in 2016 and started to practice law after passing the North Carolina bar exam in February 2017.   Since then, she has been an Assistant County Attorney in the Office of the Guilford County Attorney.

Legal Aid’s managing director, Janet McAuley-Blue, nominated Taniya because she has been very generous in contributing her time by handling expunction cases.

Mark Payne, the recently-retired Guilford County Attorney and presenter of the award, had this to say about Taniya: “First of all, Taniya is an outstanding lawyer who I know has put a significant amount of time into pro bono work.  I cannot tell you exactly how much because she is also an extremely conscientious lawyer who is scrupulous about doing it all on her own time and not interfering with her work with the county.  The county does not give her any extra time for this kind of pro bono work as some law firms do.  (Of course, all her work is, in fact, for the public and, especially the disadvantaged.  A significant portion, perhaps the majority of her work is in Child Protective Services, Adult Protective Services and Child Support.)   She does not have to account to me for her hours as it is all on her own time.”  Mr. Payne added that Taniya does up to 50 expunctions per year and she reported 82 hours in pro bono time to the GBA and the North Carolina State Bar.

The Greensboro Bar Association is proud to recognize Taniya Reaves for outstanding pro bono service.

Donate to GBA Habitat House 2021

May 17, 2021/in Frontpage Article
If you have not had a chance to contribute to this year’s Habitat project, please go NOW to our Giving Page at give.habitatgreensboro.org/campaign/bar-build-2021 and make your contribution.
Due to the generosity of so many of our members, WE ARE NEARING OUR GOAL. But we are still short of the amount we need from our membership, and we need your help to make it the rest of the way.
The Giving Page offers three ways to give: 1) an immediate contribution by credit card 2) an address for mailing checks to Habitat and 3) an email link for making a pledge payable by July 31. The site also provides an email link for you to volunteer for the construction work, which will begin on September 18 and continue on Saturdays throughout the Fall.
OUR DISTRICT COURT JUDGES HAVE THROWN THEIR SUPPORT BEHIND THE PROJECT. Every judge who is able has volunteered to work on their construction team, and several judges have committed to sponsor the front door of the house, which will welcome our homeowner family into their new home when the construction is complete.
Fox Rothschild, Nexsen Pruet and Schell Bray have also agreed to provide work crews. Working as a firm is a great team building experience for lawyers and staff. The power point presentation that was made by Schell Bray of its Schell Bray Workday on our last Habitat house expresses the enthusiasm and sense of accomplishment they felt on that day. We encourage other firms to commit to a work day, which will be scheduled at your convenience in the Fall. Please contact Bill Cooke at wocjr@bellsouth.net if your firm is interested.
THE FUNDRAISING GOAL IS IN SIGHT. PLEASE HELP PUT US OVER THE TOP BY GIVING TODAY!

Help Support Our Ninth Habitat House

March 31, 2021/in April 2021, Frontpage Article, Newsletter

Help Support Our Ninth Habitat House

After a one-year COVID delay, we will begin construction of GBA’s ninth Habitat house on September 18.  In the meantime, we need to raise the rest of the $75,000 we have committed to Habitat for the cost of house.  Already GBA members have given $40,078 including the $25,000 anonymous contribution that got us started.  In the coming weeks, you will receive an email with a link to a giving page for you to make contributions and volunteer to work on the house.  Please be on the lookout for the email.  Our goal is to complete the fundraising by May 31 and to have a list of volunteers who have committed to join in the work.

Donate Here!

This project adds to our long-standing tradition of sponsoring Habitat houses going back to 1990.  Our Habitat work has brought great credit to this Bar Association and provided us with an opportunity to work together in partnership with one another, with the judges who join with us, and with the homeowner families who move from substandard housing to a home of their own and who can then build equity for the future as they pay down their mortgages to Habitat.  When you receive the link to the giving page, please give generously so we can meet our fundraising goal going away and be among the first to volunteer for our work on the site.

Christon Halkiotis Presented with 2020 Centennial Award

March 31, 2021/in April 2021, Frontpage Article, Newsletter

The 2020 Centennial Award for outstanding and exemplary community service was presented to Christon S. Halkiotis at the virtual GBA member meeting on March 18, 2021.

Christon earned her B.A. from Rutgers University in 2000 and her J.D. (cum laude) from N.C. Central University School of Law in 2004.  She was an Assistant District Attorney in the District Attorney’s Office in Greensboro and High Point for 15 years,
from 2004 to 2019.  She has had her own law practice since October of 2019.

Christon’s community service has largely been with the Junior League of Greensboro where she had a stellar year as President.  She focused her volunteer and fundraising efforts on the League’s goals of providing resources and assistance to elderly adults in our community.   Some of the community projects she has been involved with include Friends Against Fraud, which provided assistance to elderly individuals on elder financial abuse; Community Housing Solutions, which provided financial help and volunteers to assist elderly residents in Greensboro by making home repairs when they were unable to complete those repairs themselves due to physical and financial issues; Food Assistance to provide food to elderly members of our community who are homebound; and she assisted with the rehabilitation of the Smith Senior Center.

She has always been a big supporter of the League-run thrift store, the Bargain Box. As a sustaining member of the League, Christon continues to go out of her way to support the Bargain Box through donations and volunteering her time because she believes it plays an essential role in our community, and specifically to women in need through the League’s special partnership with the Women’s Resource Center.

We are pleased to recognize Christon Halkiotis for her dedicated service to the community and her commitment to making it a better place for all.

Message from Chief District Court Judge Teresa H. Vincent

February 12, 2021/in COVID-19 Updates, Frontpage Article

Dear Members of the Bar,

As you may know, our backlog of cases has grown exponentially due to COVID-19. By not issuing Orders for Arrest (except for good cause) or entering Failures to Appear, it has caused a significant rise in pending cases. In fact, the clerk is running out of space to store pending case files. Files marked as “Failed to Appear” are not stored with pending files, neither are they counted as pending cases for purposes of establishing the number of pending (backlog) cases. Consequently, effective Monday, March 1, 2021, I will have a clerk to classify files that remain at the end of the court session with a “failure to appear” status for defendants that are NOT out of jail on a secured bond.

Best regards,
Teresa H. Vincent
